Day 2:Fort Walla Walla Museum

Today was a beautiful autumn day for a visit to Fort Walla Walla Museum. Paul Franzman gave both Kyle Williams and I a wonderful tour of the museum and some of the 15 acres within Fort Walla Walla Park. Typically the museum closes at the end of October until spring. This year they are open in November and December.

Along with history buffs, this museum is a favorite for children and their parents who often come for the day to play on the children’s play fort. All 43,000 items on exhibit have been mostly donated by people in this region. A tour of the grounds and museum typically takes about 90 minutes. Golf carts are available for those who are unable to walk through the exhibits.

Some of our favorite exhibits included the Fire House with the original fire house doors and fire engine, the Washington Territorial Prison, the region Indian and military exhibits, and of course the Pioneer Settlement.
Something you may not know about Fort Walla Walla Museum is that they have one of the largest collections of fiberglass mules, which were mostly donated by Carl Penner who first saw similar ones in Disney Land.

The museum is funded by donations. The approximately 200 volunteers make the day to day operations run smoothly. Fort Walla Walla Cellars donated 30% of sales from 30 cases of their 2006 Merlot vintage in 2009 to Fort Walla Walla Museum.

Fort Walla Walla Museum is located at 755 Myra Road in Walla Walla, and can be reached at 509-525-7703
