When I was at Studio TWOZEROTWO interviewing them for our business spotlight I heard that it was almost time for their quarterly artist rotation and now its here! The new artist is Rachel Smith. There will be a reception on Thursday the 2nd from 5-7 p.m. at Studio TWOZEROTWO located at 202 E. Main St. in Walla Walla.
Rachel Smith currently resides in Walla Walla. She attended Walla Walla University where she majored in Commercial art and minored in Photography. She then attended the University of Idaho where she got her masters in Fine Art. Rachel Currently teaches at Walla Walla Community College and is also an artist and screen printer. Her work has been exhibited both locally and nationally.
According to Rachel, her art's impact involves, "using collage, mixed media and installation my
artwork explores concepts surrounding gender, memory and marginalization." These themes are explored through a variety of media. Most of her pieces center around a previously owned object, usually something that many people can relate to, and then builds upon that object and the symbolism surrounding it. Through this personal connection and symbolism Rachel Smith attempts to alter social and cultural memories creating a new collective history.
