Day 201: Mushroom Hunting in the Blue Mountains

A sunny spring day is a great time to go searching for mushrooms in the Blue Mountians. Besides finding some delicous mushrooms you will see some beautiful displays of wild flowers. The valley view from the mountains shows a checkerboard of the crops planted below. Morel mushrooms can be found on the forest floor near fallen branches, logs, and moist areas. When you pick a mushroom it is recomended to leave the fungas base in the ground so it will grow again. It is also recomended to use a mesh bag to store the mushrooms so the spores can fall through to the ground. Morels are delicious sauted in butter, mixed in with pasta, scrambled with eggs, or dipped in eggs and rolled in cracker crumbs and fried. Befor cooking the morels they should be soaked in salt water to be cleaned. The Blue Mountains that surround the Valley are within a 45 minute drive from Walla Walla.
