Amber Waves of Grain at McKinney Farms
Walla Walla wines receive a lot of notoriety, but wheat is still the backbone of our agricultural economy. This event explores the evolution of grain harvesting in America over the last 100 years.
During this event attendees will learn about a farm equipment exposition on Russel Creek Road that attracted over 15,000 people from across the country in 1919. During this time agriculture was transitioning from horse-drawn machines to combustion engine farm equipment. All kinds of "modern" equipment was showcased at this event.
Learn about the 1919 expo, the history of the self-propelled combine, learn how a combine works, how shortages during the second world war changed agriculture, and more from Robert McKinney and his son Bret. Enjoy a sack lunch in the shade by Russell Creek while listening to historic harvesting stories told by locals.
This event is July 23 from 9 am - 1 pm. Robert McKinney Farm is located at 290 Foster Rd. in Walla Walla. Cost is $20 for adults, children are free. For more information and to purchase tickets please go to http://bmlt.org/lol-2/amber-waves-of-grain.
