Day 119: WW Kids Read Community Event

The Walla Walla Kids Read Community Event will be at Edison School on March 22nd from 6pm-8pm. There will be a book signing with authors, Jon Scieszka, Patrick Carmen, and David Shannon. Meet the Stinky Cheese Man in costume. He is a character from the book The Stinky Cheese Man Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka. There is also an opportunity to take pictures with some of the other characters from Scieszka’s books. Have fun with a book walk which is similar to a cake walk except that the prizes are books. There will be school presentations during the week for grades K-5, and a live broadcast via the web to 100 schools around the country. Day 117: Adult Soccer League

Looking for some good exercise and some fun playing a team sport? How about joining an adult soccer league? There are men’s, women’s, and co-ed divisions being formed with teams playing an eight game season including playoffs. Anyone 16 and over is eligible to participate. The co-ed league will play on Sunday, men’s league on Monday & Wednesday, and the women’s league on Tuesday and Thursday. The teams will play 7 on 7. If you would like to participate you must register by Wednesday, March 9th at the Parks and Recreation Office at 55 Moore St. in Walla Walla or online at www.ci.walla-walla.wa.us. The cost to register is $220 per team and $12 per player. If you do not have a team, you can be placed on an interest list for teams that are looking for additional players.

Day 115: Music at Waterbrook Winery

Enjoy an evening listening to an intimate gathering of Chamber musicians in the beautiful tasting room at Waterbrook Winery. Saturday, February 26th, the winery will offer an evening of music, wine, and food starting at 7pm. The cost for this event is $25 general, and $22 for Waterbrook Wine Club Members. Day 114: Dogs Day Out-Blue Mountain Humane Society

Every dog deserves a day out. Here is your chance to help. The Blue Mountain Humane Society has a program that gives volunteers the opportunity to take a dog for a walk, bring them out to socialize, or take them home for a visit. For youth under the age of 21, there are opportunities to volunteer at the shelter by socializing with the pets or brushing their hair. Every Thursday the shelter has a BMHS 101 orientation. This is required to be a volunteer, although anyone is welcome to attend. The Blue Mountain Humane Society is currently looking for a volunteer to take a dog or a cat to the Odd Fellows Home every Friday from 2-3pm. Day 113: Blue Mountain Pheasants Forever Fundraiser Banquet

The Blue Mountain Pheasants Forever Chapter is hosting their annual Fundraiser Banquet on February 26th. The Prime Rib and Salmon dinner is being catered by GRAZE Catering. There will be live and silent auctions plus a raffle for a Polaris Sportman ATV.


The Blue Mountan Pheasant Forever Chapter is involved with a number of habitat projects in the valley. They distribute seed for farmers to plant which has results of 25 to 35 acres of food plots left unharvested through the winter. In the fall of 2008 they planted a mix of 725 native trees and shrubs on four sites along the Walla Walla River west of Touchet. North of Dixie. They also covered the costs for seeding native bunch grasses on five acres of a 13-acre field enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. The field now provides excellent nesting and rearing cover and is enrolled in the Feel Free to Hunt program.

Day 112: Tooth Fairy at Walla Walla Dental

Walla Walla Dental Care is providing free dental exam, teeth cleanings, and fluoride applications for children of the age of 3 or younger. Also, the Tooth Fairy will be there on February 24th at 6:00pm. This is a free event for all ages where there will be face painting, pictures and story time with the Tooth Fairy and much more. Day 110: The Moms Network

Looking for ways to interact with fellow moms around the community? @The Moms Network Walla Walla provides many great tools for local families. 
• TMN Friday morning play dates – Friday 18th and 25th at the YMCA. We will have the upper middle gym for “open gym” at 9:30am to 11am. Cost is $1 per family for non Y members and free to members. Just check in at the front desk and pay.

• TMN Babysitting Co-op – We are meeting Wed Feb 23rd at 7pm at Olive to re-open the babysitting co-op. It took a few months off and now we are ready to add new members and update the list. If you are interested in “swapping” babysitting with other TMN members come to the meeting. We use a point system (no $).

• TMN at the YMCA Action Zone – Monday Feb 28th from 10:30am to 11:30am. Join other TMN members and children with games and rock climbing. Cost is $1 per family for non Y members and free to members. Just check in at the front desk and pay.

• Coffee Chat with WW Police Department: Tuesday, March 8th at 7pm at Olive Marketplace. Meet with Detective Kevin Bayne to learn more about local gangs, crime watch and ask questions about our local law enforcement.

The Moms’ Network is a local nonprofit organization that provides an outlet for Mom’s to communicate, receive and exchange information, network with each other and be involved in the community. There were established in June 2007.

Need a good book to read? The AAUW is having a book sale February 18th-20th at the Marcus Whitman Hotel. Thousands of books will be on sale and organized by topic into dozens of categories. There will be a Special Book section for vintage, unique, or first edition books. The books will be offered at reasonable prices. Day 108: Cowboy Dinner @ Liberty Theater

Liberty Theater is having a cowboy dinner for their opening night of True Grit. Day 107:YPOWW @ Marcy's

YPOWW's Third Thursday social event (February 17th at 5:30-7:30pm) is at MARCY's Bar downtown Walla Walla at 35 S Colville St. All are welcome, please bring friends. $3 wells, $6 Coors Light Pitchers & $1 off appetizers all night for YPOWW! EVERYONE IS WELCOME, please come and bring your friends.

There are over 300 people in the YPOWW distribution list and we generally see 30 - 50 people at each event.

How old is young? We don't really care, but if you are active and passionate about business then you should swing by for a drink or two!

There is no membership fee of any sort. This is just social.

There is no structured format for these events. Come as you are and enjoy.

Young Professionals of Walla Walla was established in 2009 to provide a place where young professionals can connect with other young professionals.

There will be no sales pitches and no boring seminars.

Join the Walla Walla Sweets Roller Girls for the first bout of the 2011 season. Come and support WWSRG newest team Twisted Vines against the Lilac City Roller Girls Maidens of Mayhem. The halftime show will feature the WW YMCA's Jr. Derby class and Spokane's Jr. Derby team.A portion of the proceeds from the bout will benefit the WW YMCA's youth scholarship fund.

Stone Soup has been a local favorite for delicious soup and sandwiches. They are famous for there Chicken Enchilada Soup and the tasty cookie you receive with each meal. Day 101: Parents Night Out

Day 99: Wineries Grand Opening


Locati Cellars is moving to suite 102 on the 2nd Street side of the Hotel. They will be open 10am that day and on into the early evening. Don Carlo Vineyard, Tero Estates, and Flying Trout will be open from 3-7pm. They are located off of the lobby of the Marcus Whitman Hotel. The 1928 Gift and Wine Shop is also celebrating it’s relocation and reopening. They are also located off of the lobby of the Hotel.

Day 98: Coffee Perk

If you are looking for a cozy place to stop in for a warm beverage, stop by Coffee Perk. Coffee Perk located at 4 South First in Walla Walla offer a warm and inviting atmosphere with stone fireplace and comfortable seating. They offer monthly seasonal beverage specials as well as a wide variety of Lattes and Italian Sodas. On the list of the February specials is the Hot Lips Latte. The cinnamon and brown sugar in this beverage makes one sweet and spicy latte. Lunch is served at the Perk Monday-Friday from 11am to 2pm. They serve soups, salads and sandwiches. Day 97: Spring Valley Winery


Spring Valley Vineyard is one of the few true estate wineries in Washington. They grow the fruit on land that has been in their family for generations. Their Tasting Room is located at 18 North Second Avenue in Walla Walla. For a $5. tasting fee that is refundable with a purchase of wine, there is the opportunity to taste the Spring Valley wines that are named after their ancestors.

Uriah-A big, rich, and full bodied Merlot.

Frederick- A Cabernet Sauvignon blend offering amazing depth, with aromas of cedar and cherry.

Nina Lee- This 100% Syrah is earthy and ripe, with sweet scents of violet, flavors of cherry, caramel, and chocolate.

Mule Skinner-This 100% Merlot is big and lush, rich in jammy fruit with subtle floral notes.

Derby-A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with a layer of mild tannins around a core of black currant.

Katherine Corkrum- A Cabernet Franc that offers a ultra-complex and earthy nose of wheat, hay, tobacco leaf, herbs, black pepper, wet dirt and violet followed by solid structure and plenty of summer fresh berries, cherry liquor, and peppery perfume.

The Nina Lee is tasted last and is paired with a delicious piece of chocolate made by Brights Candy Shop. It is a dark cacao with the Nina Lee wine in the cent of the soft Grenache.

Day 96: Superbowl Party at Walla Walla Elks Lodge


Looking for a good spot to watch the big game this Sunday? Walla Walla Elks Lodge #287 will be hosting a community Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 6th: Party starts at 12:00PM at the Elks Lodge at 351 East Rose. This is completely open to public with an $8 entre fee. The game will be projected onto a large screen and will also be shown on several large screen TV’s throughout the lodge. There will be an all you can eat Taco & Nacho buffet with other snacks and sides, this comes complimentary with your entry fee. The famous handcrafted Walla Walla Sweet Onion Sausage can be found at Onion World. Onion World has a walk-up window at First and Main in Walla Walla. The Walsh family has sold their famous sausage at the Walla Walla Farmers Market and many regional events. Forgot to bring your lunch to work? Onion World has a nice assortment of brown bag specials with choices of chips, chili, soups, sausage, and a drink. They also sell their sausage in frozen 5 packs for $12. Day 93: Art Talk at Willow Gallery

Right here in Walla Walla there is a sophisticated Art Gallery similar to one you might find in a big city. Willow Art Gallery on the corner of Second and Rose in Walla Walla is located in the historic Pantorium Building. Architect John Campbell made a space that is truly amazing. As you enter Willow you can’t miss the large metal tree that was created by Doug Gisi. On this level local you will find hand crafted jewelry, soaps, journals, note cards, ceramics, pastel paintings, and other gift items. The striking fir staircase leads up to the gallery. Photography is not allowed in this area. It is an amazing space with lot’s of light.

This month Ian Boyden is displaying his works of art, Eccentric Orbits. A reception and Art Talk with be held Friday, February 4th from 5-8pm. In this show the inks in Boyden’s sold works are made from a meteorite. Also presented with his work is an actual meteorite. Willow is open Monday, Thursday, and Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-4pm.
