Day 29: La Porte Brune

La Porte Brune – the door to culinary enlightenment. A culinary experience – underground! Just hours before the event, an email arrives with a hint of the menu and the secret location. Not many more details are shared. You just know (from other foodies) to trust Chef Andrae Bopp. Be of open mind and hungry – as the chef unfolds his event. La Porte Brune travels from venue to venue, bringing people, food and wine together in a communal style dining experience.

Andrae Bopp – and staff - cater a night of fine food and wine, beautiful tables and superb service. http://laportebrune.com/index.php They provide a chance to enjoy food that is truly “farm to table”, simple in approach, refined in flavor and with every plate prepared with a passion for its ingredients.

My husband and I attended LPB#8, and left the evening with new friends and a renewed appreciation for the gastronomic gems of our local region. Every bite was astonishing and superbly paired with the perfect local wine.

Here is the menu for the dinner I attended:
Celeriac Veloute with Apple and Bacon Hash
2009 L'Ecole 41, Walla Walla Valley, Seven Hills Vineyard, Luminesce

Roasted Wild Alaskan Cod Mediterranean Style
2008 Buty, Columbia Valley, Conner Lee Vineyard, Chardonnay

Day 27: Red Door Salon

We have the RED Monkey, The GREEN Lantern, and the BLUE Mt Tavern and the PURPLE Parasol! Did you know there was a Red Door Salon? Red Door salon used to be DonsVacuums? They recently remodled the building as as they were tearing out old walls, floorings and ceilings, they came upon a rare find. The ceiling has over a hundred squares of beautiful original tin! I love looking up as I am getting shampooed and
gazing at the shiny embossed tin squares. Even if you are not needing your hair coifed, stop in and look up!
The salon is open 9-5 Monday through Fridays. Evenings and weekends by appointment. They offer pedicures, manicures, perms, colors and cuts. By the way the stylists are great too!

Just mention the name Klicker and locals automatically recognize the name. The Klicker family has become a household name here, and rightfully so, the Klicker family has been in the Walla Walla Valley for over 100 years. The family has been selling strawberries since the early 1900’s and has been providing Christmas trees to residents since the late 1940’s.

Owner Ron Klicker

When I arrived, owner Ron Klicker was busy wiring wreathes for the upcoming holiday season. Ron shared with me that Klicker’s Berries & Antiques has been operating for about 47 years. It is a great place to pick up local seasonal produce (ranging from their famous strawberries to locally grown Christmas trees). It’s also a wonderful place to find unique gifts for those special people in our lives. It is an eclectic little shop that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Where do you go for a fabulous meal? South Fork Grill!

South Fork Grill, owned by Jodi and Chris Worden, is dedicated to offering fine dining in a comfortable environment. Chef Nimal’s menu combines seasonal farm fresh foods and award winning local wines – creating a sumptuous meal – every time!

Thoughtfully recognized as a place to mingle over flavorsome pairings, you will often fine locals meeting to share and compare life’s events. Such is the purpose of my dear Wise-Wine-Women friends. Each seasoned in life - they have relocated to Walla Walla to pursue their passion. We have two Vignerons (growers of grapes): one from Francisca’s Vineyard and the other from Patina Vineyard. We have two winery owners: one from Gifford Hirlinger Winery www.giffordhirlinger.com and the other from Lowden Hills Winery www.lowdenhillswinery.com and finally our multi-talented marketing consultant and owner of Girasol Vineyard and Inn.

We regularly seek out that perfect spot – a place to unwind and enjoy great food, wine and service. South Fork Grill – is one of our favorites.
